The most up to date estimate of the population of the United States of America is 335,659,600 living souls. In good times we see:
1 birth every 9 seconds, 1 death every 11 seconds, 1 international migrant every 32 seconds and a net gain of one person every 18 seconds. Like Neil Diamond said, “They comin’ to America.”
Modern technology is the single most important factor that makes it possible to grow and sustain such a massive population. If, or more likely when, the factor that keeps all that technology operating fails catastrophically, the people of America instantly lose the benefit of those modern systems, the ability to provide food, clean water, communications, and government services that all work together to keep society running and orderly
Our guest on AoT LIVE 270 was survival expert Jonathan Hollerman who served on the Congressional EMP Commission. That commission performed a study that determined if for whatever reason the national power grid in America becomes compromised indefinitely, meaning services and infrastructure such as banks, dry goods, fresh food, fuel, transportation, medical, federal and state governmental services, emergency services, including police and first responders become greatly reduced or more likely completely disabled, that within a year of the lights going out,
9 out of 10 Americans will die from starvation, disease, and societal collapse, etc.
That’s (on average) ten deaths per second. But it’s worse than that. People don’t start dying immediately. It takes a few weeks for starvation and violence to set in and start wreaking havoc. As Mr. Hollerman explains, starvation is much more of a problem than people dying of malnutrition. Mass starvation creates a kind of desperation and mental collapse that causes neighbors to become violent and willing to do anything to survive or save their own children first.
Therefore, it’s more likely that once the threat of starvation has become a reality for all, the situation would turn truly desperate, and we would see more like 12-13 deaths per second overall until the population had reduced itself to a sustainable level for the new technologically reduced lifestyle.
This is not fear mongering and this is not click bait, these are just the brute facts of the situation for if (or when) the national power grid suffers an attack or natural disaster that renders its capability to provide power null.
The best data shows that about 33,565,960 people would survive. Will you be one of them?
