The Evil of Leaders Who Deceive and the Equal Sin of Unquestioning Obedience
The Nature of Just Leadership
Government's primary role is to promote the common good, reward righteousness, and punish evil. Scripture portrays leadership as a sacred trust, with all authority ultimately belonging to God. Leaders are called to govern with justice, righteousness, and a fear of God, acting as stewards of God's authority (Romans 13:4).
When leaders or authority figures in any sphere of influence abuse power or engage in deception, they betray public trust, rebel against God's sovereign rule, and cause widespread cynicism and moral decay. John Calvin called such unjust authorities "robbers and tyrants."
The Sin of Unquestioning Obedience
While the Bible calls for respect and submission to governing authorities (Romans 13:1-7), unquestioning obedience to evil commands is itself a sin. The Bible also teaches that everyone is personally responsible to not blindly follow authorities but to hold them accountable (Romans 12:2; 1 Timothy 5:20).
When authorities command that which God forbids or forbid that which God commands, Christians are called to obey God rather than men (Acts 5:29). Blind obedience without discernment enables the spread of evil and contributes to the suffering of the innocent. A stark historical example is the Holocaust, where millions, in the name of the "common good," obeyed a corrupt regime, leading to horrific atrocities.
This principle is clearly demonstrated in the book of Daniel, where three young Judean men in exile refuse to bow down to the golden image set up by King Nebuchadnezzar, despite the threat of death (Daniel 3). Their unwavering commitment to God's commandments, even in the face of unjust orders from a powerful authority figure, serves as a model for all people in every age.
Isaiah’s Warning
"Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter!" (Isaiah 5:20)
Woes are divine judgments against specific sins and moral perversions that lead people astray. Isaiah’s message comes during a time of great spiritual and moral decay, where the people have turned away from God's commandments and embraced injustice, idolatry, corruption, and the inversion of moral values in favor of a self-serving, subjective morality.
By exchanging light for darkness, people willfully reject truth and embrace deception. By choosing to accept what is bitter, people willfully exchange what is pleasing, good, and beneficial for that which is unpleasant, harmful, and even deadly. This inversion of truth and justice is reflective of a perverse taste for sin and a disdain for what is wholesome and life-giving.
A society that has lost its moral bearings is a dangerous one. Isaiah 5:20 warns against moral relativism and the perversion of truth, emphasizing the dangers of a society that abandons God's truth for cultural or personal lies—a timeless warning for all generations.
When earthly authorities become instruments of injustice, it is not only our right but our DUTY to resist and uphold the justice and righteousness that God requires of all people.
